Kurdistan Region launches the unified car plate system

Kurdistan 03:19 PM - 2022-04-25

On Monday, the Erbil Traffic Directorate showcased the first model of the new car plate within the unified system with the Iraqi federal government.

The directorate stated in a statement that the first plate number of the unified system with the federal government was given to a citizen in Erbil.

It added that the plates in the unified system don't contain a city name, but rather a number symbolizing the governorate, explaining that the number of Erbil governorate is 22, Slemani governorate is 21, Duhok is 24, and Halabja is 23.

Both Erbil and Baghdad were working to unify the car plate numbers and also change the letters and numbers to English since 2021. The old plate numbers of the Kurdistan Region are in Arabic and the name of the city while in Iraq, the plate numbers are in English but the name of the registration governorate is in Arabic.

The new type of vehicle registration plate will be used for 10 years because according to the Vienna Convention, the car plate numbers should be altered every 10 years.
