VIM Foundation launches campaign against violence against women

On Saturday, the VIM Foundation launched a campaign in Slemani entitled 'Zhiyan', a Kurdish female name that means life, which is aimed combating violence against women.

The campaign focuses on shedding light on the effects of violence against women, especially victims of honor killings.

Lava Hikmat, head of the foundation, gave a speech at the ceremony and later a documentary film on combating violence against women was displayed.

In a panel within the campaign's activities, the fate of female victims of honor crimes and the need to work to reduce them in the Kurdistan Region was discussed by some academics and specialists in women's issues.

The ceremony also included, writings that symbolized the last words the victims were saying before their death, as well as audio sounds of them talking.

Unfortunately, women are still victims of honor killings and domestic violence in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Since the 1991 uprising of the Kurdish region, more than 20,000 Kurdish women have been killed in so-called “honor crimes”.

There are moves to address the existence of these graves. Through the efforts of grassroots women’s rights organizations in the Kurdistan Region.

Qubad Talabani, the deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), who is in a position of power, has always been an advocate for women's rights.
