Gali Kurdistan Channel’s 33rd Anniversary: A Milestone in Kurdish Media History

Three decades have passed since establishing the first Kurdish television channel in South Kurdistan. On September 11, 1991, Gali Kurdistan Channel commenced its broadcast by featuring a speech delivered by President Mam Jalal at Sulaymaniyah Stadium. Except for the August 31 treachery, it has continued to broadcast without interruption since then. 

The establishment of the Gali Kurdistan Channel is a momentous occasion for all. Especially considering that it was the first television channel following the Kurdish Spring Uprising in 1991, in which several cadres and broadcasters contributed to its creation. The sovereignty of the channel has been maintained along with the successive stages of victory achieved by the PUK and the Kurdish people.  

In a statement, Dilband Mustafa, the Director of Gali Kurdistan Channel told PUKMEDIA: "Three decades have passed since the establishment of the first Kurdish television channel, which began broadcasting in 1991 with the momentous speech delivered by President Mam Jalal in Sulaymaniyah. Since then, Gali Kurdistan has endeavoured to develop into a platform for expressing the demands of the people."

Mustafa further said: "Amidst the August 31 treachery, the channel stopped its broadcasting for a few days. Furthermore, Gali Kurdistan Channel has continued to broadcast without interruption, and it has successfully educated a substantial number of media professionals. Many of these individuals who were employed by the channel have since achieved fame and managerial positions in other media outlets."
