Narcotic users on the rise in the Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan 03:55 PM - 2022-07-03

Narcotic and drug users are rising in the Kurdistan Region, according to statistics announced by the Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics General Directorate.

The Anti-Narcotics General Directorate announced on Saturday that 5,419 were arrested over drug-related charges since 2019.

It also said that authorities seized over 1217 kilograms of drugs from 2019 to June 20, 2022.

In the first half of 2022, more than 132 kilograms of drugs were seized, while 999 suspects were arrested on drug charges.

The seized drugs included crystal meth, heroin, hashish, marijuana, Opium, and some other narcotic drugs, as well as addictive medical drugs.

The sale and consumption of any non-prescription narcotics are strictly forbidden in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. Kurdish and Iraqi authorities often intercept shipments of drugs passing through Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region and Iraq have seen an increase in drug trafficking and use. Last year, Kurdish authorities warned that drug use and trafficking were sharply rising.

With that being said, the Kurdistan Region lacks rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, as well as resources to raise awareness about the repercussions of drug use. Most drug consumers end up in prisons rather than rehabilitated.
