Student shoots dead two university lecturers in Erbil

A student shot dead two university lecturers in Erbil on Tuesday, allegedly over rejecting a university transferring request.

The student injured a security guard at the Salahaddin University and later he shot the dean of the College of Law, Dr. Kawan Ismail who died from his injuries.

The body of Dr. Idris Izzet Hamakhan, a lecturer at the College of Engineering, was also found in one of his neighbors'  house with gunshots on him. He ran to his neighbor's house to escape the killer but couldn't survive. He was shot by the same student who killed the dean of the College of Law.

The student allegedly had issues with the wife of Dr. Idris Izzet Hamakhan who is a lecturer at Soran University. She filed a lawsuit against the student and today was the first day of their trial. However, prior to the trial, the accused went to the house of Dr. Idris and shot him dead at one of his neighbor's houses.

According to preliminary information, the student wanted to be transferred from the Soran University to the Salahaddin University but his request was refused.

Erbil Governor, Omed Khoshnaw told a news conference that the student had a problem and was expelled from Soran University and was not accepted at Salahaddin University; therefore, in addition to these two lecturers, he threatened a number of teachers.

Security forces arrested the student and the police have opened an investigation into the incident.

Gun violence is an issue in the Kurdistan Region and the government has struggled to bring ownership under control. Firearms, including sniper rifles and machine guns, can be purchased on the black market.
