Millions recall anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Ali in Najaf

Millions of visitors flocked to the city of Najaf to perform the ceremony of visiting Imam Ali, on the occasion of the anniversary of his martyrdom in an impressive atmosphere and rituals.
The city was filled with people wearing black and holding banners expressing grief over the great tragedy. The visitors are mostly Shitte Iraqis and Iranians.
Mohamed al -Mousawi, Secretary-General of the Koufa Mosque, said in a press statement that "the service affairs department has provided additional places to receive the visitors, where the visit is expected to be over a million like every year."
The security and service and health departments in the province have prepared integrated plans to receive visitors from various Iraqi governorates as well as Arab and foreign visitors to revive this ad.
The 21st day of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan coincides with the martyrdom anniversary of the First Imam of Shia Muslims Ali ibn Abu Talib (PBUH), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (S).

On the 19th of the fasting month of Ramadan of the year 40 A.H, Imam Ali came to the mosque in Kufa for his morning prayers. Imam Ali (PBUH) gave the call for prayer and became engaged in leading the congregation. Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam pretending to pray, stood just behind Imam Ali (PBUH), and when Imam Ali (PBUH) was in a state of prostration, Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam dealt a heavy stroke with his poisonous sword, inflicting a deep wound on Imam Ali’s (PBUH) head.
