The 40 refugees, who were arrested in Libya recently, arrived at the Slemani International Airport on Friday afternoon by efforts of Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region.
The 40 migrants, all of whom are citizens of the Kurdistan Region, were arrested two months ago by the Libyan security forces as they were trying to cross borders to Europe.
The Summit Foundation For Refugee and Displaced Affairs (SFRDA) in cooperation with Mr. Qubad Talabani managed to return them home safely.
Last September, SFRDA in cooperation with Deputy Prime Minister have brought back another batch of migrants stranded in Syria and detained by the Turkish-backed Al-Nusra Front.
Iraq and the Kurdistan Region suffer from continuous migration flows. Many rely on smugglers and risk their lives through perilous journeys in overcrowded boats.
