On Wednesday, November 11 marks the 11th anniversary of the re-electing of late President Mam Jalal as President of Iraq for a second term.

Eleven years ago today, the Iraqi Parliament Council elected President Jalal Talabani as the President of Iraq again, and Osama al-Nujaifi was elected as Speaker of Parliament within an agreement reached by senior leaders.

After his re-election, President Talabani immediately said that he would assign former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to form the next government.

President Talabani won 195 votes out of 213 deputies who participated in the voting process, and 18 ballot papers were considered invalid.

Shortly after announcing his victory, President Talabani took the constitutional oath before the deputies. President Talabani called for a "national partnership government" and said, "Today is the victory of the Iraqi free will."

Nujaifi got 227 votes out of the 295 deputies, and 68 ballot papers were considered invalid.

This historic event had international reactions, as countries welcomed the re-election of late President Jalal Talabani, considering that this would lead to the establishment of security and the restoration of Iraq's full national sovereignty through the formation of the permanent Iraqi government.
