Teachers Union calls on Higher Education Ministry to amend educational curriculum

Teachers Union called on Higher Education Ministry to amend educational curriculum  so that it is equal to the needs of the market, and to grant additional opportunities for teachers to continue their educational attainment for master’s and doctoral degrees.

On August 15, 2021, corresponding to Sunday, Mr. Aram Muhammad Qadir, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, accompanied by the Ministry’s Adviser and Director General of Administration and Finance, visited the office of the Kurdistan Teachers Union secretariat, where he was received by the President of the Union and a number of members of the Union.

In a special meeting, the President of the Union described that the visit of the Minister and his accompanying delegation as a very important visit, and declared that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is one of the important and essential ministries in preparing teachers, specialists and professionals in order to serve the country, as well as in building a strong scientific infrastructure.

Regarding the past two years and the way the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research dealt with Corona disease, the Union valued the ministry’s handling of the disease as it was good and that the ministry succeeded in finishing the school year for students by adopting the reciprocal education system where a section of students studied in campus and the other section through the online system. 

School studies were in a continuous on and off state in the Kurdistan Region due to the corona pandemic since early 2020.

Regarding the ongoing reforms in the university system, the President of the Syndicate submitted a request to the Minister of Higher Education to reconsider the admission system in universities as well as to amend the educational curriculum so that it is equal to the needs of the market, and to grant additional opportunities for teachers to continue their educational attainment for master’s and doctoral degrees.

On the other hand, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research praised the role of the Kurdistan Teachers Union as a good role because the Union is assisting the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as well as the Ministry of Education in a way that contributes to the success of the educational system, and stressed that the Ministry will be cooperating and in full coordination with the Teachers Union.

The Minister added, regarding the new school year, that the ministry will try to start the school year at the beginning of September, and that most of the lessons will be on campus and rely little on the online system.

Earlier in August, the Education Ministry has September 14, 2021, as date of the new school year.

The Education Minister also indicated that some changes in the education curriculum will be made in order to prepare specialized cadres in all fields so that they are equal with the needs of the labor market, and the Ministry will try to raise the scientific level of teachers in order for them to carry out their work better, And that the Ministry has a plan to increase the academic seats for postgraduate studies (Masters and Ph.D.) in universities, according to needs, and to grant more possibilities for teachers to benefit from these opportunities. And that the ministry is currently working with the Council of Ministers to give universities more autonomy to manage their financial and administrative affairs.

In the end, the Minister confirmed that they will be in constant contact with the Teacher Union in order to better serve the Kurdistan community.
