As the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has stopped distributing residential land to teachers since 2005, 60% of teachers have not benefited from land and housing units, the Kurdistan Teachers Union said on Monday, calling on the government to include education and teachers among priorities of its works.

The Teachers Union assert that it fully believes that teachers deserve to have adequate housing places, pointing out that the Union has made strenuous and continuous efforts since 2005 with the government to distribute units and residential lands to teachers.

"As a result of its continuous attempts, the Union has achieved three residential projects in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Garmian," the Union said.

The Erbil project consists of (1,013) residential units which are all completed and occupied by teachers. The Sulaymaniyah project consists of (1,950) housing units, 95% of which are completed and currently occupied by teachers, while the Garmian project consists of (1,590) houses and apartments, 50% of which are completed.

Earlier in August, the completed units of the Garmian housing project were distributed to teachers in a ceremony.

"We believe that good education is led by a good teacher, and therefore the teacher must be saved from worries and grieves," the President of the Teachers Union said in a speech during the ceremony.

"This will not be the last housing project as we are in efforts to establish other residential projects so that large numbers of teachers will benefit from," he added.

The President of the Union has also called on the government to include education and teachers among the priorities of the state’s work and programs to develop the state and guarantee a bright and better future.
