The mayor of Sulaymaniyah visited the house of Professor Jamal Nabaz on Thursday and awarded his family for preserving and renovating his heritage home.

"Efforts are being intensified to preserve the image of the city of Sulaymaniyah, especially in the historical neighborhoods, and we will support all people and parties who are working to protect heritage houses in those neighborhoods," the Sulaymaniyah Central District said in a statement.

Awat Muhammad, the mayor of Sulaymaniyah, accompanied by the chairman of the joint committees and the archaeological preservation committee, visited the house of Professor Jamal Nabaz, which is currently in the renovation phase and was welcomed by Niamat, sister of Jamal Nabaz and his family.

The mayor of Sulaymaniyah expressed his gratitude for their efforts to protect their cultural homes and preventing the destruction of their city's great national wealth.

"Although we haven't been able to preserve all of the old houses and streets and keep them as they were, we all try our best to protect the remaining part of the old houses and streets of Sulaymaniyah," he said.

According to Nabaz's sister, this house is 125 years old and it is built on an area of 640 meters square.

"We will not allow it to be destroyed at any cost and we will renovate at our own expense and abilities," said Niamat, sister of Professor Jamal Nabaz, thanking the mayor of Sulaymaniyah for his visit and appreciation.

Regarding the renovation process, artist Dawan Maruf, who supervises the reconstruction of the house, said: "We are in consultation with some artists and architects and we are currently busy renovating the house."

"We will turn this house into a cultural and historical center and the headquarters for Jamal Nabaz Cultural Organization," he said.

He also pointed out that they will protect the authentic image of the house and renovate it to look exactly as it did in the past.

Prof. Jamal Nabaz is a renowned Kurdish scholar, intellectual, and writer who was born on the 1st of December 1933 in Sulaymaniyah and passed away on Dec. 8, 2018.

He wrote many essays on the political, social, and human rights of the Kurds in Arabic Iraqi newspapers. One of these publications was a critical article published in spring 1954 in “Sawt al-Ahali” (voice of the population). The article took up the issue related to a press interview given by Celal Bayar -the president of Turkey at the time- during his visit to the United States. Bayar allegedly denied the existence of any other ethnic groups but Turks in Turkey.

Nabaz is also credited with publishing the first physics book in Kurdish as well as books on algebra and other mathematics. He also translated some of Shakespeare and Nikolai Gogol’s works into Kurdish.
