Rewaz Fayeq: We Must Not Lose Opportunity of Conducting Elections
P.U.K 10:55 PM - 2024-05-01Dr. Rewaz Fayaq
In light of the Federal Court's ruling regarding the electoral law, the Kurdistan Region Presidency has issued many decrees directing the holding of the upcoming parliamentary elections on June 10. A member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) Political Bureau says: “The PUK insists that the elections be held on schedule and that the Kurdistan Region's political structure not be undermined further; therefore, we must not pass up this opportunity for conducting the elections.”
Elections are a right of Kurdish citizens
Dr. Rewaz Fayeq, a member of the Political Bureau of the PUK, said in an interview with Kurdistani Nwe Newspaper: “The PUK's insistence on holding elections on time is in compliance with the content of the decree of the Kurdistan Region’s President, which is the right of the Kurdish people to elect their representatives to the parliament and a new government should be established.”
“We are committed to our adherence to the Leadership Council's decision, which was made in favour of timely elections by a unanimous vote. If the elections are not held on that date and the Kurdistan Region President uses his authority to revoke his decree or reschedule the elections (as a legal person), I think that the president has the authority to set the election date but not to postpone the elections; if this is done, it will go against PUK’s will, as we support holding elections on schedule,” she added.
All parties except the KDP are prepared for elections
“We think that all the elements of a healthy election are prepared in the region; commissions, laws, and political forces are prepared for elections, with the exception of the Kurdistan Democratic Party. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to democratic principles that grant the Kurdistan people the right to timely elections,” she further stated.
Dr. Rewaz also stated that the PUK is preparing for the elections in all of its organs, including candidate lists, work plans, slogans, and technical and logistical matters. Furthermore, the PUK's headquarters and committees have clarified inside each circle how the election campaign committees in each constituency were formed, as well as the chairman and committee members.
PUK wants elections to take place on schedule
“Given that the lack of elections and legitimate institutions in the Kurdistan Region is one of the primary causes of the Region's political structure weakening, the PUK believes that the stage has not yet reached its conclusion and hopes that the elections will take place on schedule and that the people of the Kurdistan Region will not miss this opportunity,” she further said.
